What Causes Hair Loss?
Shedding a small amount of hair daily is a normal part of the hair growth cycle. However, if you notice thinning areas, patchiness, or excessive hair falling out, you may be experiencing hair loss.
Male pattern baldness is the most common reason for hair loss, especially for older men. However, other conditions can also contribute to hair loss, including:
- Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
- Thyroid disease
- Stress
- Telogen effluvium (TE)
- Traction alopecia
- Lichen planus
- Lichen planopilaris
- Dermatitis
- Alopecia Areata
- Alopecia totalis
- Melanoma
- Auto-immune conditions
What are the Best Solutions for Hair Loss?
Medications that Treat Male Pattern Baldness
While hair transplants are often the best choice for many of our Closter, NJ patients, others prefer to try medication first. Minoxidil—also known as Rogaine—and Finasteride are the two most common hair-loss medications.
Minoxidil (Rogaine) is a topical treatment you can apply to thinning or balding areas. This hair loss medicine helps widen the blood vessels under the skin to stimulate increased circulation and hair growth.
This medication also comes in tablet form, and can be taken daily to work from the inside out. However, if you stop using Minoxidil, your hair loss will return.
Finasteride—known as Propecia or Proscar—is an oral medication that prevents testosterone from converting to dihydrotestosterone, which can cause hair loss. Like Minoxidil, if you stop taking Finasteride, your hair loss will return.
If you decide to take one of these medications, our hair loss specialists in Closter, NJ, will also recommend a custom regimen of topical treatments, supplements, and hair care products to help them work better.
Additionally, if you want to stop taking the medications and don’t want surgery, we offer alternative regenerative procedures like exosome and stem cell therapies.
Surgical Hair Loss Solutions
If medication and topical solutions aren’t producing the desired results, you may want to explore alternative therapies and hair transplant procedures. At The Hair Transplant Center – New Jersey, we provide a comprehensive suite of proven hair restoration treatments. Our experienced hair surgeon, Dr. Golio, and our team of hair restoration specialists use the latest technology and techniques to achieve long-lasting results.
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)
FUT—commonly called “hair plugs”—is surgical hair restoration. During the procedure, Dr. Golio removes a strip of healthy hair follicles from the back of your head and then transplants them into balding areas.
Since FUT is a minimally invasive surgical procedure, it’s performed under local anesthesia. The surgery takes between four and eight hours.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
FUE treatments are similar to FUT. Both procedures involve transplanting healthy hair follicles to balding areas. However, FUE doesn’t require incisions. Instead, individual hairs are moved from the donor area to the thinning area in a quick outpatient procedure. This treatment is often referred to as “hair implants.”
Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)
SMP is a non-invasive alternative to procedures like FUE and hair transplantation. Instead of stimulating hair growth, we use a microneedling tool to tattoo fine, hair-like lines on your scalp to achieve the appearance of hair growth. This procedure takes less than an hour, requires no downtime, and can help restore your confidence.
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)
PRP therapy can be an effective way to reactivate dormant hair follicles and restore natural hair growth without transplantation. During the procedure, our hair restoration specialists will take a small amount of your blood, refine it to extract the platelets, and use a microneedling tool to administer them to the treatment area.
Platelets are nutrient-rich and encourage skin healing and circulation in the treated area. This process helps stimulate hair growth to reduce patchiness and thinning.
Facial Hair Transplants
While hair loss is most often associated with crown baldness, a person’s eyebrows, beard, or mustache can also thin as they age or as the result of a medical condition. This can change the look of your face and cause emotional distress.
Our facial hair transplants can help reverse this process and restore your facial hair’s thick, healthy growth. During the procedure, we’ll harvest follicles from your head and transplant them to your face. This gives your facial hair fullness so you can feel good about your reflection again.
Female Hair Restoration
Hair loss can affect both men and women. That’s why we offer hair restoration services to all genders. We can help identify the reason for your female hair loss and develop a treatment plan to restore your natural hair growth.
