What Causes Hair Loss and Balding?
If you are noticing balding or thinning hair, there may be a few underlying causes. In men, male-pattern baldness is the most common factor for hair loss. In women, hair loss is sometimes caused by illnesses like thyroid disease and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).
Other conditions that may contribute to hair loss include:
- Stress
- Telogen effluvium (TE)
- Traction alopecia
- Lichen planus
- Lichen planopilaris
- Dermatitis
- Alopecia areata

Medications That Promote Hair Growth
Depending on the severity of your loss, two medications are most commonly prescribed to treat male-pattern baldness:
Minoxidil (Rogaine)
- Stimulates new hair growth by expanding blood vessels in the scalp
- Applied directly to the scalp (or in tablet form with a prescription)
- Hair loss can return if you stop using Minoxidil
Finasteride (Propecia or Proscar)
- Most effective for mild to moderate loss
- Commonly prescribed as a pill to slow hair thinning or balding
- Hair loss can return if you stop using Finasteride
Our hair restoration doctors can also provide topical compounds, products, supplements, vitamins, laser caps, shampoos, and conditioners.
Hair Transplant Procedures
For more lasting results, we also offer a number of transplantation procedures in Wyckoff.
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)
During a FUT hair transplant, a strip of hair is surgically removed from the back of the head and is dissected by our surgeon into individual grafts, which are then placed in thinning or balding areas. FUT procedures take between 4 and 8 hours and clients are placed under local anesthesia for the duration.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
While a FUT takes a full strip of hair from your scalp, FUE procedures extract individual follicles to transplant them into areas experiencing loss. This outpatient procedure is popular because of its seamlessness and lowered risk of mismatched growth patterns.
Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP)
PRP therapy uses a microneedling tool to inject your blood’s platelets into your scalp, which stimulates thick hair growth, reduces shedding, and decreases visible patchiness.
Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)
During a scalp micropigmentation (SMP), a skilled hair restoration specialist implants pigment underneath your scalp using a microneedling machine. In just 20 minutes to an hour, this procedure will mimic the appearance of naturally grown hair and leave you feeling confident.
Facial Hair Transplants
If you’ve noticed hair loss or patchiness in your beard, mustache, or eyebrows, we offer facial hair transplants to transplant healthy follicles to your face.
PDO Threads
When combined with transplantation, polydioxanone (PDO) threads are sutures that can improve blood flow and oxygenation of the scalp. They also trigger the body’s natural platelet response and contribute to collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid production, resulting in potential hair growth over six months.
Stem Cell Grafting
Using a procedure called Stromal Vascular Fraction (SVF), stem cell grafting extracts adult skin cells from an area on the back of the scalp and injects them into problem areas to repair and reactivate unhealthy follicles.
Female Hair Restoration
If you are a woman experiencing hair loss from thyroid disease, PCOS, or other underlying conditions, you’re not alone. Dr. Golio, our experienced hair transplant surgeon, offers female hair restoration to help you get your confidence back and feel like yourself again.
